The Mayfield Village Planning Development Department was formed in early 2009. Over the years, functions of community planning and economic development in the Village have been performed collectively by Village departments and citizen committees. As the economic climate changed in 2008 and 2009, we decided that the timing was right to formalize these efforts into a department, in order to position ourselves ideally for positive changes in the economy.

Voice of the Village
There are two primary functions of the Planning Development Department. The first is to facilitate community planning by implementing Mayfield Village’s comprehensive plan. This responsibility involves working closely with the Building Department, the Planning and Zoning Commission, and the Planning Development Committee. Within its planning function, the Planning Development Department evaluates and re-evaluates the zoning code and its effectiveness in promoting land uses that Mayfield Village residents support.
The second function is the safeguarding of Mayfield Village’s business environment through economic development. Mayfield Village is dedicated to rewarding its resident businesses not only with unparalleled municipal services, but also with an attentive ear to the needs of those businesses. Mayfield Village is the home of over 150 businesses and approximately 10,000 employees. With a greater than 2:1 ratio of people employed in the Village to people living in the Village, we have a responsibility to address the needs of our business community.

Because Mayfield Village has entered into Cuyahoga County’s protocol for economic development, please know that if you are a business currently located in Cuyahoga County, we may ask you for permission to talk to your current city of residence about your relocation.
In 2007, Cuyahoga County’s Department of Development named Beta Drive as one of three designated areas in the pilot round of their Innovation Zone program. As part of this program, Mayfield Village has identified medical imaging as its target industry focus. In the fall of 2008, Beta Drive’s flagship medical imaging company received some pretty impressive recognition. Quality Electrodynamics (QED), a manufacturer of medical imaging equipment that opened its doors on Beta in 2006, was honored by Forbes Magazine as one of the 20 most promising companies in America.
The Innovation Zone project is an ongoing effort. Currently in its implementation phase, the Beta Drive Innovation Zone just saw the completion of its biggest infrastructure project since the business park was created. A ring of fiber optic cable has been placed by Innovation Zone partner OneCommunity around Beta Drive and sections of Wilson Mills and SOM Center Roads. This investment in IT infrastructure is already paying dividends for Mayfield Village and its businesses.
The Mayfield Village fiber optic network is a new facet of our Beta Drive commercial district. The network is intended by the Village to save our businesses substantial amounts of money on their internet and other IT costs. Mayfield Village not only partnered with regional dark fiber organization Everstream to install the fiber, but the Village and Everstream have teamed up to offer very competitive internet service prices to companies wishing to connect to the network.
